MT. SHASTA (NEWS1130) – The body of 26 year old UBC grad Thomas Bennett has been found on Mount Shasta in California. The climber had been missing on the mountain since the weekend.
Bennett’s body has been brought back to the bottom of the mountain. An autopsy has yet to be performed to determine the cause of death. Rescuers had been prevented by stormy weather and poor visibility from conducting a search for several days. Mountain temperatures were near -20 degrees where the body was found.
Bennett’s climbing partner called 9-1-1 on Sunday to report Bennett had collapsed near the summit of the 4,267-metre mountain near the California-Oregon border. It’s believed Bennett had been suffering from altitude sickness. His climbing partner left him in a snowcave.
Bennett is a University of B.C. honours graduate who worked as a chemical engineer in Oakland.
