NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Enquist Lodge is the newest place to warm-up on Mount Seymour. But not many people know it’s named for the man who founded the resort.
Harold Enquist says his father worked hard to get Seymour up and running back in 1937. He explains his dad had a love of skiing but “he never had an opportunity to do much of it because he was busy building the old lodge, and the new, old lodge.”
Enquist tells News1130 that those were different times. “It was very, very hard work. This is before the days of mechanization, all the tools were hand tools and everything had to be packed to Seymour on your back.”
He says his most vivid memory at Seymour was 1948 while looking out over a flooded Fraser Valley. “I can remember the lake out there gradually grow bigger and bigger.”
So next time you enjoy hot apple cider and cookies at Harold’s Cafe at Enquist Lodge, you’ll know the story behind the name.
The Enquist family operated Seymour until 1951.
