TORONTO (NEWS1130) – One of Canada’s biggest bands, Rush is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today.
From playing in their parents’ basements in Willowdale, Ont., in north Toronto, to selling out stadiums around the world, Rush has become one of the most respected rock bands.
Over their 45 years as a band, the power trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart has done Toronto proud.
Rush ranks third, behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band.
The induction takes place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast on HBO on May 18.
Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters will be delivering the tribute to Rush.
Other inductees at Thursday’s ceremony include Heart, Donna Summers, Randy Newman, and Public Enemy.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame began honouring performers in 1986 and Rush was first eligible to join back in 1998, so the induction has been a long time coming.
In the 15 intervening years between Rush’s eligibility and their admission, some of the artists who were welcomed into the hall include Aerosmith, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Steely Dan, the Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, ZZ Top, the O’Jays, Blondie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Ronettes, Madonna, Abba, the Hollies, the Comets, Donovan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
