Dozens of Vancouver Sun/Province employees taking buyouts

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some familiar names are starting to vanish from the pages of Vancouver’s main dailies.

A number of longtime employees at the Sun and Province are taking buyouts, as the newspapers fight for survival. As many as 62 people are leaving on Friday from various departments at Pacific Newspaper Group.

On the content side, Columnist Craig McInnes has already left. Reporters David Baines, Scott Simpson, and Janet Steffenhagen; and Arts and Life Editor Maggie Langrick are among others about to say goodbye.

Publisher Gordon Fisher says they must address declining revenues.

“Is it a viable operation? The answer is no, not if we stick with the status quo. Is there a viable operation, is there a future for print? Will the Vancouver Sun and Province still be with us years to come? If we do it right, yes.”

Fisher tells us the way they cover news is changing. “It’s not about yesterday’s news story in today’s newspaper. That’s really what I call old news. It’s about adding context and adding colour, and adding analysis that isn’t available.”

He notes it will be a number of weeks still before we get a sense of the final number of departures.
