VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada Post is moving towards community mailboxes as it gets out of the home delivery business.
The question is where are they going put them?
Now, the Vancouver Park Board is making sure that wherever they do go, it won’t be in any of the city’s green spaces.
Board commissioner Constance Barnes calls it a pre-emptive strike.
“So many times things come to the board and I’m like ‘damn, why didn’t we get ahead of this one,’ so for me it’s wanting to make sure we’re ahead of the game and that Canada Post knows that our green space is just that, it stays as green space.”
She says the concerns are warranted.
“People are really worried about where these massive boxes are going to go. My mind immediately went to if people are worried about putting in front of their house, they’re going to be looking down the street and going, there’s a nice little piece of park.”
The board voted 4-2, refusing to allow community mailboxes on parkland and green spaces that fall under their jurisdiction.
But commissioner John Coupar, one of the two voting against the motion, says it’s unnecessary right now.
“I really don’t think it’s within the Park Board jurisdiction and Canada Post has made no request. If they did make such a request, it would have to come to the board. To put forward motions when there is no imminent threat, we could do that day after day.”
