LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – Trinity Western University is taking legal action in Ontario and Nova Scotia, where the provinces’ law societies won’t let the school’s grads practice law.
Critics worry gay and lesbian students pay be discriminated against because of the Christian school’s community covenant.
The university’s president says the law societies in Nova Scotia and Ontario are sending a message that religious people can’t keep their own values and participate in society.
News1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray says profits are likely a key factor in the decision to sue.
“You can imagine that if people knew that their market for jobs was limited because large provinces in the country would not recognize their law degree, it might have a dramatic impact on the school’s ability to attract students,” he explains.
“It may be also a strategic move by the university. By issuing the action, they may force some negotiation so there’s potential the matter could get settled outside of court.”
The university says it will also apply to be another party in a lawsuit involving a Toronto lawyer who is suing the BC government over its decision to approve the school.
