METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do your letters and packages get delivered to a community mailbox? Has anything ever gone missing?
Canada Post has revealed that Metro Vancouver has the worst record of mail thefts in Canada.
One area seems to be a big target: There have been 250 break-ins in Langley this year.
Langley Township Councillor Steve Ferguson says the problem is with the original community boxes. “They were a very poor quality and basically they were easily broken into by people just using a simple screwdriver or a crowbar or something like that.”
Ferguson says Canada Post has a replacement program and has upgraded 1,500 boxes.
Canada Post plans to move to more community boxes over the next five years by reducing door-to-door service in order to save $500 million.
RCMP warn that when thieves break in, they are not just looking for your cheques; they are also looking for your personal information to steal your identity.
Mounties recommend you pick up your mail every day and place a stop on it if you are going on vacation.
If you think a box has been tampered with, contact the RCMP to report it.
