City of Vancouver proclaims December 2nd ‘Giving Tuesday’

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver is joining a global movement to give back to the community and put commercialism behind for a day.

The City of Vancouver has proclaimed December 2nd Giving Tuesday.

The day was started in the United States in 2012 and is meant to follow Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Founding partner Woodrow Rosenbaum says 2,500 partners signed up to participate in the first year and that number has increased to 18,000 this year.

“Some civic movements have come together, as we have seen in Vancouver. We’ve also had more charities and more partners involved earlier, so we’re seeing a lot more activity this year than we were last year.”

The idea is for people to partner with charitable organizations and donate their time or money. “It really is a complete cross-section of the charitable sector in Canada from big names like Red Cross, Heart and Stroke and the MS Society to small regional charities. We’ve got umbrella organizations like Habitat for Humanity Canada as well as many of their chapters.”

He says there are roughly 200 organizations participating in Vancouver. “There are lots of different activities. You can donate to charity directly to our site. On Giving Tuesday donations made by Interact will be matched, up to $25.”
