VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds made their way Saturday to Sunset Beach in Vancouver to for action on climate change.
It was called the Vancouver Action for Jobs, Justice and the Climate.
Participants were focused on one region of the country in particular.
“We’ve got to stop the tar sands. We’ve got to stop all of this pollution,” says one protester.
“This is climate change happening here right now; it has hardly rained here in Vancouver since January. That has never happened before”.
“This is specifically about the tar sands development and how we’d like the tar sands shut down. Essentially you have to leave it in the ground,” says rally organizer Bill Winder.
“Right now governments are pumping trillions of dollars into subsidies into fossil fuels and this is, for anyone who really thinks about it, this is just the wrong way to go”.
Many note the heat wave striking all of western Canada as another real example of climate change and the need for action.
They say real job growth can be found in the green sector and the federal and provincial governments should stop subsidizing the oil and gas industry.
