PEMBERTON (NEWS 1130) – The Pemberton Music Festival is in full swing this weekend, despite a massive wildfire burning 67 kilometres west of the village.
There are 67 firefighters are battling the Elaho blaze that has burned more than 12,000 hectares.
The Mayor of Pemberton, Mike Richman, says they are working with a number of organizations to get daily safety assessments, since the blaze is at zero per cent containment.
“Emergency Management BC, Environment Canada, the Wildfire Management Branch, incident commander from Wildfire Management, Red Cross, [and] Vancouver Coastal Heath. All those agencies are on the line every single day and are monitoring the situation every single day,” he explains. “It is a dynamic situation and weather is obviously always a factor so every day it is being monitored and every day we get updates and recommendations through these agencies.”
HUKA Entertainment, who is organizing the festival, will also be patrolling for spot fires near the grounds and are regularly sprinkling the area for moisture.
