Surrey woman charged with animal cruelty in dog stabbing

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A woman in Surrey has been charged with animal cruelty, accused of stabbing a dog that had gone missing from its owner’s yard in Surrey’s Chimney Heights area.

It began back in February when a landlord called the RCMP saying his tenant had been attacked by a dog according to Eileen Drever with the SPCA. When officers arrived they discovered a 24-year-old woman soaked in blood.

“Turned out that the blood that this individual was covered in was actually not from her it was from her it was actually from the dog. The dog had been badly beaten and had received multiple stab wounds,” Drever explains. “The cornea of the eye had been punctured and a ring was actually located under the eyelid of this dog, the back of the throat had received deep cuts as well. As I said it was just a horrific attack on a defenceless animal.”

When Lindsey Hirtreiter was taken into RCMP custody for a psychiatric evaluation, a four-year-old girl was also found inside the suite. The child was put into the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

If convicted, Hirtreiter faces a maximum fine up to $75,000, up to two years in jail and up to a lifetime ban on owning animals.

The dog, named Ryder, underwent life-saving treatment for his injuries and was reunited with his family.
