VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is giving $50 million to a local foundation for health research in order to stay competitive with the rest of the world.
The money will fund researchers who have come to BC.
The boost in funding is expected to last two or three years and will be used for a number of projects.
“The ministry has been very clear in identifying a number of key priorities, like rural and remote health [and] integration of primary and community care to help keep people out of hospitals,” says Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research president and CEO Dr. Diane Finegood.
“One of our core activities is funding researchers… to protect their time from having to do excessive teaching or other kinds of activities — it enables them to do the research that they’ve set out to do,” adds Finegood.
She tells us this funding is key because their budget was scaled back a while ago.
An example of a project developed through the foundation is a device that enables someone to measure blood oxygen levels using a smart phone.
