Southern Gulf islands make NY Times list of 52 places to go in 2016

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia has made the New York Times list of 52 Places to Go in 2016.

The publication is recommending people from around the world visit the Southern Gulf Islands.

The New York Times says while Vancouver is considered more of a luxury destination now, travelers seeking simpler Pacific Northwest charms are increasingly venturing just offshore. “Rocky coast and pebble beaches give way to rolling pastures and forested peaks. Winding roads lead from farms and wineries to cheeseries, breweries and artists’ studios.”

BC Tourism Minister Shirley Bond says this helps in increasing awareness about the province globally.

“Well I think it’s fantastic and when you take a look at the list of 52 places, there are some pretty significant places in the world and now the Southern Gulf Islands finds itself in some pretty impressive company,” she says.

The publication also mentions the Mediterranean feel in the summer. “Each of the nearly dozen major islands has its own character and contrarian island culture, but all offer secluded coves and trails to explore, and abundant wildlife, from eagles to orcas.”
