VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Spring arrives on Sunday, and with the warmer weather, people are spending a lot more time outside — maybe lounging on the beach or picnicking in the park.
So, how would you like to be able to sip a beer or glass of wine while you do that?
The province is continuing to look at the idea, wanting to find out how interested municipalities are in a provision that has been part of BC liquor laws for four decades.
Today is the deadline for civic governments and police to say whether they’d like you to be able to have a drink in designated parks and beaches.
We went out this morning to find out what you have to say about it.
Egan thinks it’s a very good idea, arguing when drinking has caused unacceptable behaviour, it’s been because of a lack of experience.
“You go to Germany — you go to many countries — people drink in public spaces and because they have the opportunity, they have the experience, and it’s under control,” he argues.
“I think we need to start off small and have it in very defined public spaces and then allow for maybe a future where we can grow that a little bit and relax around drinking laws,” he adds.
That provision in the province’s liquor laws allows municipalities to decide on areas where people can drink, but it doesn’t seem to have ever been used.
Patios in Vancouver are set to move into summer hours, and some to even physically expand on April 1st.
