2 Japanese immigrants drown on Salt Spring Island

SALT SPRING ISLAND (NEWS 1130) – The BC Coroners Service is naming two young men who died while on vacation on Salt Spring Island.

Masashi Shintani and Ryo Yamaguchi, both 25, went swimming with a third person at Weston Lake just north of Fulford Harbour last Tuesday.

According to the coroner’s office, Shintani and Yamaguchi failed to reach a wharf in the lake. They were rescued and taken to hospital, but they could not be resuscitated.

Both men are originally from Japan, but had since moved to BC.

Their deaths are still being investigated.
