Search for missing Delta hiker Gord Sagoo called off

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – After more than a week of combing the mountains for a missing hiker from Delta, search and rescue operations are being suspended.

Gordon Sagoo, 50, was hiking with two friends to Baby Munday Peak on Aug. 14 when he ventured ahead of the group and disappeared.

What followed was a massive search effort involving ground teams, helicopters, drones, and police dogs, but no trace of Sagoo was found.

On Sunday, Chilliwack Search and Rescue reviewed all aspects of the search, and recommended to the RCMP that it be called off.

The announcement comes one day after Sagoo’s family and close friends held a tearful news conference in Surrey, expressing faith that he would be found.

In a statement, members of the Sagoo family thanked the various search and rescue teams for their “courageous and tireless efforts” over the past week. They also vowed to “continue the search privately via other channels.” An online fundraising page is now collecting money for that purpose.

The statement continues, “we have received an overwhelming amount of support from family, friends and the community. This is a true testament to Gordon’s character. We want to thank each and every one of you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your love, support and kind words. They are what has kept us going.”

Mounties say they will be in close contact with Sagoo’s family going forward.
