Many people hurt during deck collapse at a wedding in Langley

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – Several people are hurt following the collapse of a deck at a wedding on 268th Street near 58th Avenue.

Corporal Craig Van Herk with Langley RCMP says 911 calls started coming in at around 5:45 p.m.

“We believe there were over 100 people at this house,” he says. “A number of people were on the deck when it collapsed.”

He says while many people have been hurt, nobody was killed.

BC Emergency Health Services confirms 20 ambulances were called out to the home, including one air ambulance. 40 guests at the wedding party, including children and the elderly, were injured. RCMP said Saturday morning up to 15 of them were in serious condition, and up to 3 in critical.

Deputy Fire Chief Russ Jenkins says it appears there were too many people on the wooden deck, which was on the second storey of the home.

“The way it happened, the deck pulled away from the building, and it accordion-ed on itself. A bunch of people on it fell about 10 feet.”

He says among the injuries were compound fractures, broken legs and broken ankles.

Fire crews triaged the patients until paramedics could arrive.

Van Herk says the RCMP is still trying to figure out what triggered the collapse.
