Haul rope for Sea to Sky Gondola arrives from Switzerland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There’s good news for those working to get the Sea to Sky Gondola back up and running. A brand new haul rope has arrived from Switzerland, following a journey of more than 8,200 kilometres.
The new, 120-ton cable will replace one that was destroyed in August when vandals made it up a tower in the middle of the night and cut the cable, sending 20 of the 30 gondola cars crashing to the ground. The damage was excessive, forcing the lift to close and prompting an investigation by the Squamish RCMP.
It still hasn’t made any arrests in the case.
While the extensive repairs are underway, parts have been ordered from Europe and may take significant time to ship. But the haul rope arrived early, and will be installed over the next week.

Operators of the gondola say the cable’s arrival is a major milestone in the rebuild process. But new gondola cabins still have to be manufactured and won’t be arriving in Squamish until next year.
They hope to have the attraction operational by the spring.
