Expect to wait for flu shots due to high demand amid pandemic

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The flu vaccine should be widely available around the Lower Mainland by next week, but it may not be easy to get one anytime soon.
Flu shots have just been rolled out in some places in the province.

But don’t expect to drop in and get the vaccine since making an appointment online is required this year.
Chris Chiew, London Drugs general manager of pharmacy, says appointment slots will be opening up about a week in advance and so far demand has been high.
Chiew says one location that administered 500 flu shots last year has seen more than 1,000 requests from people registering to know as soon as the vaccine was available.
“More people are wanting the flu vaccine this year. As a result, as we open up the days they seem to get booked up very quickly.”
Chiew says people can book a week in advance, but they may need to check in daily, possibly for a few weeks before finding a free slot.
A survey earlier this month found more British Columbians planned to get the flu shot because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
