Vancouver Heritage Foundation celebrates 10 years of ‘Places That Matter’ project

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – From BC Place to Hogan’s Alley and everything in between, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation is celebrating a decade of its “Places That Matter” plaque project.
Executive Director Judith Mosley says it’s all about recognizing some of the lesser-known people, places, and events that have helped shape our city.
“It really began with the 125th anniversary of incorporation of the City of Vancouver back in 2011,” she explained. “But really, it’s become a very substantial project that has continued to grow and really connected us to so many different people and organizations and communities throughout the city.”
Executive Director Judith Mosley says it was a chance to get to know sites that don’t always get their due.
“It really gave us an opportunity to reach out as far as possible … and really learn about different places that are valued by communities in the city,” she said.

The project’s website includes a map that shows the Places that Matter, and a description of why.
Mosley adds the project isn’t done yet.
“We really encourage people to get out and explore or explore online. Submit a story. Help us continue to build the project. It continues to grow. It’s proving to be a really valuable resource, a really valuable way for people to learn about the city,” she said.
So far, 88 blue “Places That Matter” plaques have been put up throughout the city. They are easily identified by their trademark blue oval design.
A free, virtual celebration is set Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
