Whistler website temporarily down following ‘cyber security incident’

WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) — The Resort Municipality of Whistler has fallen victim to a “cyber security incident,” and the resort municipality has suspended all online, and some in-person services in response.
A release from RMOW says this is being done as a precautionary measure.
People who visited the site Wednesday were greeted by an ominous message when an unidentified hacker gained access to the system.
“This is very fun … guys, if we do not talk now, you’ll have big troubles in future,” read the message.
“I have a lot of patches on your systems to gain access, and you can’t restore your network from backups again. So talk in chat and I’ll stop this now. I’m waiting.”
One of two links attached is to download the Tor browser that enables anonymous communication online.
The links on the Whistler site were followed with text that read “no way to run.”
Online and select in-person services remain suspended.

A release from the RCMP says RMOW email, phones, network services and website are currently unavailable, and in-person service at the municipal hall has been temporarily suspended.
RCMP and cybersecurity experts are working together to respond to the attack,while the municipality says, “We apologize for this inconvenience and will provide an update when we are able to return those services.”
In the meantime, the public should be vigilant about phone calls or emails that appear to be originating from the RMOW, with the municipality reminding that it does not ask for private personal information by phone or email.
There’s no word if anyone’s personal information is at risk.
