Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley well-water potentially contaminated, province says

By

The B.C. government is issuing a warning for the potential of contaminated well-water in parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

While there are no specific problem areas listed, the province says the flooding has increased the risk of contamination of well-water due to the overflow of liquid manure storage systems.

“This is due to potential overflow or failures of liquid manure storage systems because of high precipitation caused by recent storms.”

The province says it is working with local agriculture operators to ensure their wells are clear and useable.

At this point, it’s not clear if any health problems have developed in connection with contaminated wells.

According to the Ministry of Health, residents who own or are responsible for a private drinking-water well that has been flooded should assess their well and take steps to protect anyone who uses the water.

The government is also urging people to respect evacuation orders again.

“Never re-enter the flood zone unless emergency management officials have indicated that you may do so.”
