Trinity Western women’s volleyball wins U Sports Championship

The pandemic meant they couldn’t compete for a championship for two years, but the wait appears to be worth it as Trinity Western’s women’s volleyball team will be bringing the trophy home to Langley.

The Trinity Western Spartans won the national title in women’s university volleyball Sunday.

The first ranked Spartans defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 in the championship game in Calgary at Jack Simpson gym.

Set scores were 25-14, 14-25, 25-19 and 25-20.

“I’m proud of these ladies. They’ve put in a hard run for this,” said coach of the Spartans, Ryan Hofer.

“It’s almost been a three year journey, and I’m proud of the hard work, effort, and just the love they put into the game.”

The Spartans were led by Avery Heppell, who finished the match with 11 kills and seven blocks.

Hofer says his team wanted to feel every emotion.

“The fears, the joys, the scared moments, the nerves – we wanted to feel them, embrace them and then find a way to work through them and really just finish our hearts with a ton of love,” said Hofer.

This is the program’s second U SPORTS Championship after previously winning in 2015.

Due to the pandemic the previous championship was played in 2019, which was won by UBC.
