Earth Day 2022: Metro Vancouver events

Friday, April 22 marked Earth Day, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the climate and planet, and to educate folks on how to reduce their environmental impact.

Climate change has been an evident reality living in B.C. Over the past two years, the province has seen a deadly heat dome, destructive flooding, and frigid cold snaps. With the climate forecast only expected to only get worse, an expert says now is a great time to get involved.

“If you think of last year, we really had a preview of what the future will look like,” said Lionel Pandolfo, a climate scientist with the University of the Fraser Valley.

“Almost 600 people died during the heat dome, and with the floods, you can imagine the thousands of animals that perished. The destructions will take billions to fix. This is something that we need to take into account and actually force the government to actions and fix the situation more permanently.”

If you want to get involved, Pandolfo says “there are hundreds of organizations in British Columbia,” which advocate for action on climate change.

Examples include Extinction Rebellion Vancouver, Fraser Riverkeeper Society, Earthsave Canada, and Environmental Youth Alliance, if you’re between the ages of 14 and 25.

If you are not so eager to join a group, but still want to contribute, there are numerous events taking place across Metro Vancouver over the next week that you can take part in.
