Charges laid after child in Surrey inappropriately touched

By Victoria Mann

Charges have been laid against a 24-year-old man after a child in Surrey was groped at a store Sunday evening.

Mounties say the three-year-old’s father and other bystanders kept the suspect at the scene until officers arrived.

RCMP say the incident took place near 88th Avenue and 124th Street.

When police spoke with witnesses, reviewed CCTV from the store and arrested the suspect.

The man was released from custody before the Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit took charge of the investigation and submitted a report to Crown Counsel recommending charges.

On Wednesday, 24-year-old Adam Alexander Newbigging was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, Newbigging was taken into custody the following day. He remains custody awaiting a court appearance.

“The nature of this incident and the fact it involved a young child in a public place is very concerning,” says Cpl. Vanessa Munn, media relations officer with the Surrey RCMP.
