Man killed by police in Kamloops after hostage situation injures two women

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate after a man was shot and killed by police in Kamloops.

On Sunday at around 5:20 p.m., RCMP says 911 operators received a call from a woman asking for help from what reportedly sounded like a vehicle.

“A short time later a second call was received reporting an erratic driver on the Trans Canada Highway, and a woman attempting to get out of the vehicle,” Dawn Roberts, director at BC RCMP, wrote in a statement Monday.

A third caller at around 5:45 p.m. reported that a family member and a child had been abducted.

“Officers attended the scene and reportedly located an empty vehicle with an alleged weapon inside,” Roberts wrote.

According to Roberts shortly before 9 p.m. that evening, officers went to a rural property after receiving reports the suspect’s vehicle was nearby. Police established a roadblock before the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in.

“ERT attended the scene and took over containment. After 3 a.m., the male suspect then reportedly exited the trailer with a weapon and a child. During the engagement with officers, the man was shot and killed. The child was uninjured and a woman was subsequently located with non-life injuries inside the trailer,” Roberts wrote.

At a secondary location, Kamloops RCMP went to the suspect’s home around 9 p.m. after receiving a report of a second woman who was found injured and bound inside, police say.

According to police, both women were transported to hospital for treatment.

While the initial incidents are under investigation by RCMP, the IIO BC is now investigating police actions in the death and injuries.
