Injured retriever gets airlift off Mount Seymour by North Shore Rescue

An injured dog had the ride of its life Tuesday, as injuries to its paws lead to a hitch down from atop a North Shore mountain.

While local North Vancouver search and rescue organization North Shore Rescue (NSR) was responding to a call near Elsay Lake, it received another call from a hiking group that was trying to carry their more than 100-pound dog back from Seymour Peak.

The retriever had managed to cut its paws on sharp alpine rocks, the rescue service said, and was unable to walk.

“This is a steep area with fall hazards and there is significant risk attempting to carry a dog of this size through this terrain. NSR went to Tim Jones peak and landed at our pad at the top,” NSR wrote on its Facebook page.

Getting strapped to the back of an NSR volunteer, the dog was hiked out of the steep terrain, along with its owner and hiking partner, and flown back to Seymour Parking.

Not usually tasked with rescuing animals, NSR member Ryan Morasiewicz explained on social media that in “narrow circumstances,” per the Emergency Management BC policy, it is possible to have search and rescue respond to an animal needing help.
