North Vancouver march honours residential school survivors

By Angela Bower and Emily Marsten

Many gathered together in North Vancouver to honour the survivors of residential schools and those who passed.

On Friday, locals met at the site of the former St. Paul’s Indian Residential School.

“It’s an honor to be here today and to remember those who went to a residential school, my heart is full,” one person told CityNews.

Participants, many wearing orange shirts, first attended a ceremony and then proceeded to march from Lower Lonsdale to the Tsleil-Waututh community centre.

The march symbolized the walk children of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation took to and from school.

The streets were lined with bystanders that stood waving, smiling, and holding hands.

But for many, the event came with mixed emotions.

Bonnie Thomas Angel attended this residential school when she was 7-years-old.

“Really heavy feelings, they are heavy and good,” she said.
