Young bobcat’s brief stay at Peachland backyard goes viral

By James Paracy

It might have just been eyeing up it’s next lunch, but this bobcat sure wasn’t in a hurry to leave.

Peachland resident Naomi Miller was intrigued when her daughter mentioned a “cool cat” sitting in their backyard. Intrigue quickly turned to shock when Miller realized it was, in fact, a very young bobcat.

“I glanced out the window and saw the tip of it’s ears and thought, ‘there’s no way,’” she explained.

Miller says she didn’t see any trace of the feline’s mother, although she didn’t rule out the idea that mom was nearby.

“There’s lots of places for them to hide and be really still in the woods without them being too far from the baby.”

WildSafeBC supports Miller’s guess that it wasn’t fully independent just yet.

“Although the young increase their degree of independence steadily throughout the first fall and winter, they generally stay with the mother until the following spring,” a WildSafeBC information bulletin reads.

While some people in Instagram and TikTok comment sections speculate the bobcat may have needed help, Miller is fairly sure it was just interested in her housecat on the other side of the window.

“I had a delicious meal sitting next to me and very eager to go out and play with it,” she said with a laugh.

Views on Miller’s bobcat videos keep rising as they continue to gain traction.

As of Friday morning, her TikTok video had hit more than a million views.
