New Westminster recovery centre responds to allegations of sexual misconduct

Editor’s Note: The following story deals with sexual assault and may be distressing for some readers. If you or someone you know is in need of support, you can find province-specific centres, crisis lines, and services here.

As stories of sexual misconduct at a women’s recovery centre in New Westminster surface, that treatment centre is denying all professional links with the man at the centre of the allegations.

In a statement to CityNews, Westminster House Society (WHS) states the person has never been associated with its programs.

“This individual has never been an employee of WHS and has never been associated with our programs in any way. WHS has strict policies and procedures to ensure the safety of the women in our care, and we have never had any complaints of misconduct from women in our care in our 42 years of serving women in the community,” the statement said.

The facility is also encouraging people to call police.

“We urge any and all people who have experienced sexual harassment to contact the police. In this particular case, we urge victims to contact the New Westminster police and identify file #NW23-1607.”

CityNews has not been granted an interview with Westminster House despite repeated efforts.

An anonymous Facebook group, which surfaced late last month with hundreds of members, details allegations of sexual assault and harassment by a fitness contractor who is said to have worked at the facility.

No charges have been laid in connection with these allegations.

Meanwhile, the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD), which started its investigation recently, wants anyone with information to reach out to them.

“We want to highlight we are considering all evidence that is connected to vulnerable women being victims of sex-related offences. If anyone has information they feel may be of value, we are hoping they can contact our Major Crime Unit,” NWPD Sgt. Justine Thom said in an email to CityNews.

The Major Crime Unit can be reached via its tipline at 604-529-2430 or email and quote the file number above.
