‘Serious’ New Westminster fire leaves many displaced

A major fire in New Westminster’s Sapperton neighbourhood Monday night left many people displaced from their homes.

In a Twitter post Tuesday morning, Mayor Patrick Johnstone says the fire in a three-storey apartment building engulfed a couple of suites by the time firefighters arrived.

Johnstone says no one was injured in the ‘serious’ fire. However, many folks have been forced from their homes.

“Most tenants were able to return to their suites (with fire escort) to collect important belongings. Temporary accommodations are being set up through ESS. The building systems need inspection, but most may be able to be back in their homes in a couple of day,” the mayor’s Twitter thread reads.

Emergency Social Services is now helping the displaced tenants, Johnstone says, and the New West Community Church has opened its doors up to folks needing shelter.

With many having “lost most everything,” Johnstone is encouraging people who want to help to drop donations off at the church.
