Vancouver Island man hospitalized, IIO called in

Police say a Vancouver Island man is in the hospital after a confrontation with police.

The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP says officers were called to a residential street around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday night, where they found the man driving a “track loader skid steer” down the road.

Officers attempted to stop the driver, but the loader ended up crashing with the police vehicles.

After the crash, Mounties say an officer “discharged their weapon striking the driver.”

Emergency Health Services were called and he was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been called in to review the incident.

Police say, due to the IIO taking over the investigation, they will release no further information.
