Burnaby RCMP sets up new tip line after Gandhi statue vandalized

Mounties in Burnaby are stepping up their efforts to get information after a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized.

The Burnaby RCMP says it has created a “special phone information line” that people can now call.

This comes after police say the statue’s head was “deliberately” removed at Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus on Monday night.

“We are appealing for assistance from the public as we believe there are people that have information that could help our investigators,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj said.

“Anyone with information is asked to call the dedicated phone information line.”

Gandhi is famed for leading India to its independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.

According to the City of Burnaby, the bronze statue was donated to the university by the East Indian community of B.C.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 604-646-9511.
