Former NHL star Scott Gomez hired as Surrey Eagles assistant coach

Two-time Stanley Cup champion and former NHL star Scott Gomez has been hired as assistant coach of his former junior team, the Surrey Eagles.

The Anchorage, Alaska native played BCHL hockey for the then South Surrey Eagles in the 1996-97 season, posting 124 points in 54 games as the team cruised to a league-best 47-7-6 record and ultimately won the Fred Page Cup.

Gomez was later picked in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, he went on to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the 1999-00 rookie of the year as well as two Stanley Cups with the Devils.

He retired with 1079 games played and 756 total points following the 2015-16 season after a short stint with the Ottawa Senators.

Gomez joins an Eagles team that finished second in the Coastal Conference in the 2022-23 season and was ultimately knocked out in the second round by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
