A beloved Strathcona business is saying goodbye after three decades in service.
Owned by the Bernardino family, Union Market has announced that it will be closing its doors for good on Oct. 31.
“It was not an easy decision but we strongly believe we should follow our dreams and embrace new adventures and challenges,” a statement posted by the family online reads.
“We felt in our hearts our time here is done and we view it as the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our lives and the opportunity to explore new horizons.”
Open since the early 1990s, Union Market has been a go-to specialty market and eatery for many in and around Strathcona.
“It has been an honor to serve the community of Strathcona, as well as the Portuguese community of Vancouver,” the Bernardino family says.
Located in the area of Union Street and Hawks Avenue, Union Market serves traditional Portuguese fare and offers ready-made meals, baked goods, and coffee for purchase.
Many shared memories and words of support upon news of the business’ impending closure.
“Our families are bound together forever even if you are not across the street… or provide us with just about everything we eat. What your family has done here is a once in a lifetime magical treat for all of us neighbors. Happy trails and bravo for taking on the next adventure!” one person wrote.
“Noooooooooooo! It’s official. Been dreading this day. Bless you all for the many many years in the hood. You will be sorely missed!” the Strathcona Beer Company commented.
Many thanked the business’ owners for being a part of their lives throughout their 31 years of operation, with some saying, “You helped raise my children and many others!”
“We would like to express our deepest appreciation to our employees for their hard work and dedication,” the Bernardino family said in its announcement. “We could not have accomplished all that we did without their unwavering commitment.”
Deep thanks was also extended to the community, who the family says have been more than just customers.
“You have become a part of our extended family and we will always cherish the memories we have shared together.”
