Llama seen walking Surrey streets trapped: RCMP

It appears humans aren’t the only ones to enjoy Sunday strolls.

The Surrey RCMP says its members helped animal control officers corral a llama — who’s being referred to by officers as Larry — that was seen running around the area of 64 Avenue and 176 Street Sunday afternoon.

According to Mounties, calls about the wayward animal starting coming in around 2:30 p.m.

A llama named Larry by Surrey RCMP officers was caught and reunited with its owners after the animal was spotted running around part of the city on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023.

Const. Parmbir Kahlon says it’s not entirely clear how Larry got loose. Kahlon says the llama was eventually caught around 5 p.m., though he admits the animal “wasn’t too happy about the adventure coming to an end.”

“No fight. Officers were aware that Larry might be a bit of a spitter, but luckily, nobody was injured and Larry was safely rescued,” Kahlon said.

“Animal control did take care of Larry and I believe they’re in the process or have already reunited him with his owner. Sometimes, animals are very creative creatures — sometimes they get out on their own or somebody forgets to close a gate. It’s usually accidental and they end up on the roadway.”

Kahlon is asking anyone who may see an animal out of place in Surrey to report the sighting to animal control or the RCMP.
