B.C. hockey player pursuing legal action against another player, BC Hockey, and Hockey Canada

A B.C. hockey player is pursuing legal action against Hockey Canada, BC Hockey, and another player after he was seriously injured in a game in Northern B.C. earlier this year.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and the Skeena Ice Arena Association are also listed as defendants.

In the BC Supreme Court notice of Civil Claim, Steven Ronald Venman, alleges Milo Johnson negligently struck him during a game on Jan. 28.

At the time, Venman suffered several injuries, including a concussion and fractures to his jaw, cheeks, and eye sockets and still needs medical care today.

The documents allege Venman was conducting himself safely and prudently, and the other player’s actions constituted assault and battery. Additionally, it states his behaviour was outside of the rules of the game and could not be seen as a reasonable hockey play.

The claim alleges the incident was caused by the negligence and breach of duty of the institutions involved, their employees, and players.

It alleges they failed to take reasonable care to ensure Veneman would be safe and fostered an environment where unacceptable behaviour either is tolerated or goes unchecked.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
