Highway 99 reopens after power line falls in south Surrey

Highway 99 was closed for a couple of hours Thursday after a crash downed a power line over the major route in south Surrey.

The highway reopened around 12:30 p.m., according to DriveBC. Meanwhile, BC Hydro says it has the King George Boulevard onramp to Highway 99 closed for power pole repairs..

According to the Surrey RCMP, a car crashed into a power pole on the onramp just before 10 a.m.

“The power lines actually span from the north side of Highway 99 all the way to the south side of Highway 99, so when the power came down, the tension was released on those wires and they came down across all four lanes of the highway,” Corp. James Mason told CityNews just after 11 a.m.

The RCMP previously said no injuries were reported. However, the incident forced the closure of Highway 99 in both directions as crews worked to fix the damage.

BC Hydro told CityNews the incident knocked out power to about 2,700 customers.

“BC Hydro crews arrived on-site within 30 minutes and immediately began its damage assessment while ensuring the area is safe,” the utility provider said in an email around 11:30 a.m.

Traffic was being detoured onto King George during the closure.
