Surrey looks to bring a dozen new cannabis stores to city

The City of Surrey is calling for public feedback on a draft Retail Cannabis Framework that would bring up to 12 cannabis stores to the city.

The framework would allow up to two retail cannabis stores in each of Surrey’s six communities, as well as guide their locations and selection.

Surrey’s Board of Trade is applauding the initiative, saying in a release it supports a framework developed with the cannabis industry and the public in mind.

“Surrey can implement a safe and efficient cannabis regulatory framework, including amendments to zoning bylaws, business licence bylaws, bylaw notice enforcement bylaws, and municipal ticket information bylaws,” said Anita Huberman, president and CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade.

The federal government legalized the recreational sale of cannabis in Canada back in 2018. The city says Surrey effectively prohibited the retail sale of recreational cannabis to give it time to understand the new legislation, observe how other municipalities approached cannabis retailing, consult with the cannabis retail industry, and develop an approach for Surrey.

Surrey residents will have until Feb. 5 to respond to the survey before it is brought in front of city council.
