Person dies after weekend fire in White Rock

One person has died after a fire broke out in White Rock over the weekend.

White Rock Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Ed Wolfe tells CityNews the victim was in the unit where the blaze originated Saturday. They were taken to the hospital but later died.

He says fire crews have completed their part of the investigation, which has now been handed off to other agencies.

“At this point, it’s definitely not suspicious. At this point, it’s undetermined,” he explained Monday.

Crews were called to the 30-unit building in the area of Thrift Avenue near Merkin Street just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters said at the time that the blaze was contained to one unit but that there was water and smoke damage throughout the building.

“All residents were displaced due to power and water and gas being shut off, so the restoration company is working diligently to try and get people back in as soon as possible,” Wolfe added.

No details about the victim have been released.
