Vancouver Giants’ Brett Mirwald up for WHL Goaltender of the Year

Brett Mirwald of the Vancouver Giants is a 2023-24 division nominee for the Del Wilson Memorial Trophy.

The award goes to the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Goaltender of the Year.

The 20-year-old, 6’1″, 180-pound netminder led the WHL in saves and minutes played. He also had the third-best save percentage and number of wins.

He suited up in 55 games during the regular season, going 29-22-3. Ten of those games include 40-plus saves performances. Mirwald’s season-high 51 stops came Dec. 8 at Everett.

The three other division nominees are: Harrison Meneghin of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Jackson Unger from the Moose Jaw Warriors, and the Portland Winterhawks’ Jan Spunar.

The winner will be announced over the next weeks.

The Giants continue their first-round playoff series versus the Everett Silvertips Friday at Langley Event Centre for Game Four. Puck drops at 7 p.m. on Sportsnet 650.

Vancouver trails the best-of-seven series two games to one.
