Motorcyclist killed after crash near Massey Tunnel

An early morning fatal collision on Highway 99 just before the Massey Tunnel has killed a motorcyclist, the BC Highway Patrol confirmed to CityNews Wednesday.

Police had closed most northbound lanes for multiple hours to investigate the collision, which happened around 6:15 a.m. As of 2:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, callers to CityNews say the lanes have reopened.

The Delta Police Department initially described the incident as a “serious” multi-vehicle collision. Just after 10 a.m., the BC Highway Patrol confirmed the collision was fatal.

In a follow-up statement, the BCHP says the motorcyclist “ran into a car and the motorcyclist fell onto the roadway.”

“The motorcyclist was critically injured by the rear wheels of a semi-truck and tragically has passed away,” Corp. Melissa Jongema said.

Police are now looking to speak with the driver of the semi who “did not remain on scene and may not know what happened.”

Meanwhile, the DPD says the northbound highway closure will be in place for “several hours” as police investigate.

Traffic is currently getting by in the counterflow lane only. Traffic along Highway 99 is backed up from Ladner Trunk Road.

Delta Police Department Acting Insp. James Sandberg says police are in the process of closing on-ramps to Highway 99 northbound. Police will clear the traffic that is already on the highway, and then will shut all lanes heading north.

The DPD is advising all drivers to avoid the highway and to take the Alex Fraser or Pattullo Bridge as an alternate route.

The BCHP is asking for any witnesses, including the truck driver and company related to the semi-truck, who may have seen the incident or have dashcam footage, to contact police at 604-526-9744 and refer to file 2024-932.
