Port Coquitlam apartment fire sends 2 to hospital

Two people have been sent to hospital and at least three units have been displaced after a fire at an apartment building in Port Coquitlam Tuesday.

Crews say flames broke out around 12 p.m. in the three-story building at Wilson and Bury avenues.

Fire Chief Blake Clarkson told CityNews that flames quickly spread “through the attic” after starting in a unit.

He says everyone got out, but two people were sent to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Clarkson says it’s safe to say that multiple units will be displaced by the fire.

In a post to social media, Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West confirmed that the city has “activated an emergency support service centre” at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre, providing care and assistance to all those impacted.

West added, “Individuals displaced from these addresses are asked to please check-in to the reception centre.”

Clarkson said the fire is causing a lot of “low-hanging” smoke in the area.

Police have reportedly closed streets surrounding the apartment building. The Coquitlam RCMP has asked drivers to, “please avoid the area and plan an alternative route.”
