BC SPCA rescues 36 diseased dogs from Okanagan breeder

The BC SPCA says it has rescued more than 30 dogs and puppies from an “irresponsible” breeder in the Okanagan area.
Animal protection officers were reportedly alerted to the situation when one of the dogs — all 36 of which are Pomeranians — was adopted and fell ill with parvovirus, which is often fatal for puppies.
“Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that requires intensive around-the-clock veterinary care,” said Eileen Drever, a senior officer with the BC SPCA.
“Puppies are particularly susceptible, and even with the best treatment, a good outcome is not guaranteed.”
The society says two puppies have since died.
Drever says vaccinations and proper hygiene are keys to preventing the disease, but all the dogs were exposed to living in unsanitary conditions with “feces all over the floor.”
The society says some of the adult dogs were pregnant and they were all being held in a garage with no heating or A/C.
The BC SPCA says its protection officers were most disturbed by discovering a puppy less than two days old, alone in a wire cage with no bedding.
“We have no idea why the puppy had been taken from their mother,” said Drever. “Puppies desperately need their mother’s milk to survive.”
The society says it’s looking for foster homes for the Pomeranians while it continues to investigate the breeder, adding that a dedicated animal lover has reportedly agreed to match donations up to $20,000 for their care.
“You should always ask to see how the dogs and puppies are being housed and what condition they are in,” said Drever. “No one should be supporting irresponsible breeders.”
