Surrey semi-truck driver facing criminal charges after allegedly driving while impaired

The BC Highway Patrol is recommending charges after a semi-truck driver slammed into four parked cars in Port Coquitlam on Monday.

Police say they responded to calls of a semi-driving erratically on the Mary Hill Bypass around 3 p.m. According to police, the driver allegedly crashed into the cars along Industrial Avenue before officers arrived on the scene.

“It is unbelievable that a professional driver would consider operating a vehicle of this size while impaired, and that’s why BC Highway Patrol is recommending criminal charges,” Corp. Michael McLaughlin stated on Wednesday.

The driver is now facing charges, including operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol level over 80 mgs/100 mls, and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

In addition to the two criminal charges, the 42-year-old driver had his driver’s licence seized and is facing a 90-day driving prohibition.

The identity of the Surrey man will not be revealed until his first court appearance in Port Coquitlam in March 2025, police say. The driver’s semi-truck has also been impounded.
