Two men died Tuesday after falling into a lake near Agassiz while ice fishing.

The Agassiz RCMP says the men, who had gone to fish on Grace Lake during the day, were reported missing when they failed to return home.

Mounties were notified around 11 p.m. after a family member discovered a big hole in the ice surrounded by fishing gear, where the men were thought to be.

Police attended the scene of a with Kent-Harrison Search and Rescue (SAR), Mission SAR, and Chilliwack SAR.

“Two bodies were located below the surface of the ice,” said RCMP.

Mounties say the Underwater Recovery Team, trained in diving techniques, including ice diving were employed to recover the bodies.

Police are now working with the BC Coroner Service and criminality is not believed to have been a factor in their deaths.

“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that ice conditions are constantly changing and even if you’ve tested the thickness, the weather and water conditions can make it unsafe,” said Corp. Chad Raymond.
