Kitsilano Pool to reopen for whole summer

By CityNews Staff

Vancouverites whose summer plans include swimming at the Kitsilano Pool have something to look forward to.

The City of Vancouver says its goal is to have the popular saltwater pool open for the entire summer, starting on the May long weekend.

That’s quite the change from last year, when the pool was only open for one month after undergoing $4 million in repairs.

At the time, Mayor Ken Sim said the closing of the pool was a “disappointment shared by the entire city.”

“But we didn’t give up. We knew we couldn’t lose this beloved asset,” said Sim in July.

He explained that repairs were intended to extend the pool’s life by another two years while plans for a new facility get underway.

In a statement to 1130 NewsRadio Wednesday, the city reminded residents that Kits Pool is now 50 years old and close to the end of its life.

“The need for ongoing maintenance and potential repairs is always a consideration each year. We will keep the public informed if there are any changes to the anticipated opening date,” said a spokesperson.

Pending any unforeseen complications, the city says the pool will open Saturday, May 17.
