36 residents displaced after Saturday’s seniors’ complex blaze

A massive blaze seen and smelled across the city has ravaged a seniors' complex in North Vancouver. There were no fatalities, but paramedics on scene treated five people, two of whom were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Dozens of residents are still unable to go home after a fire tore through the Silverlynn Apartment seniors’ complex Saturday, the District of North Vancouver says.

Fire Chief Mike Danks says 30 units were affected by the fire at the complex, located at 1335 27th Street in Lynn Valley, leaving 36 people displaced.

As of Sunday morning, the fire was not completely put out.

“The fire is 95 per cent extinguished at this time, but there are still a few hot spots that are remaining that crews are going to continue to have to action,” Danks said around 11 a.m. Sunday.

He says that what made this blaze particularly challenging to tackle is that three-quarters of the large complex was still under construction.

“When buildings are under construction, they are quite vulnerable to fire conditions, and they can lead to rapid fire spread,” he said.

“When the crews arrived on scene several minutes after being called, there were heavy fire conditions, heavy smoke conditions, and they had over 10 people trapped on balconies in different areas on the building. And so while they were trying to effect rescues of getting people off the building, they were also trying to fight this fire that was growing at an incredibly fast rate.”

The fire broke out at the apartment complex Saturday morning. No fatalities have been reported, but paramedics on the scene treated five people, with two of them being taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Ten people had to be evacuated from their balconies.

This isn’t the first fire at this complex. In 2022, a blaze claimed the life of one person and displaced 70 residents.
