Vancouver Island teacher charged with sexual exploitation

Police say a Vancouver Island teacher has been charged after she allegedly engaged in sexual interactions with students.

The Saanich Police Department says it received information about the teacher in early 2024 and found a number of alleged victims.

Thirty-six-year-old Marnie Burnham, who has also taught under the name Marnie Forin, is facing three charges of sexual exploitation and two counts of child luring.

“She is currently awaiting trial and has been released with several conditions which include no contact with her alleged victims, not to be on school property, and no contact with anyone under the age of eighteen,” police explained Tuesday.

Court records show the alleged offenses occurred in 2023.

Police believe there may be more victims and they’re urging anyone with information to contact special investigators by emailing specialinvestigations@SaanichPolice.ca.

The Greater Victoria School District issued a statement Tuesday saying it’s aware of the allegations and will continue to fully cooperate with police as investigations continue.

It says Burnham has taught at two high schools within the district.

“In response, the District immediately commenced an investigation and reported the matter to local police who also opened an independent investigation. The District also notified the Ministry of Education and Child Care and the Teacher’s Regulation Branch,” said a superintendent.

“Students seeking support are urged to do so through the police, school counsellors or administration, and/or through the District’s Indigenous Education Department, who are all available to provide invaluable safety and wellbeing services to our learning community.”
