Man charged with impaired driving after 2024 fatal Abbotsford crash

After a 16-month investigation, Abbotsford police say charges have been approved against a man suspected of impaired driving, leading to a fatal crash.

On Feb. 3 last year, the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says it was called to reports of a serious crash between two vehicles along Old Yale Road just before 1 p.m.

At the scene of the crash, 84-year-old Phil Anderson died, and police say the male driver of the “offending vehicle” was detained.

In an update Tuesday, the AbbyPD says a 43-year-old man was arrested and charged this month with impaired operation causing death, operating a conveyance while impaired causing death, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Investigators say the case was complex and required “considerable time to reach the charge approval stage.”

A police release included a message from the victim’s family, remembering him as someone who embraced life fully, even into old age.

“Phil Anderson was a man deeply devoted to his family and community. His sudden passing came as a profound shock, leaving a deep void not only in the hearts of his loved ones but also among his church family and colleagues at the Abbotsford School District,” said the family.

Court records show the suspect is expected in court on Monday, June 23.
